Terran McGinnis who is the Facility Historian at Marineland gave a fascinating presentation on the history of Marineland/Marine Studios.  We learned that it was founded in 1938 by Leo Tolstoy’s grandson as the first oceanarium in the world.  With windows below the surface of the water tourists and film makers were able to observe ocean animals in a somewhat natural habitat.  Marineland today has transformed from dolphin shows to dolphin education and experiences.  Research that came out of Marineland includes the development of copper sulfate as an algae treatment and the discovery of dolphins use of echolocation.
