About the Event
In October, we will be reading The Frozen River, which is a 2023 historical fiction thriller by Ariel Lawhon. It takes place in Maine as the Kennebec River begins to freeze in the winter of 1789. A corpse floats down the river and becomes trapped in the ice. The story follows Martha Ballard, an 18th-century midwife in Maine, as she leverages her standing as a medical professional to investigate two crimes: both a murder and a rape. Limited to 35 people.
